Bottleneck Calculator

About

Why this site exists

PC hardware advice has a credibility problem. A great deal of it is produced to fill a page rather than to answer a question, and a great deal of the tooling around it is built on numbers that do not mean what they are presented as meaning. This site is an attempt to do the small, specific thing well: give you a straight answer about your hardware and show the reasoning behind it.

What we do differently

Three things, none of them complicated, all of them commonly got wrong.

  • Real power figures. Our PSU calculator uses PL1 and PL2 for processors and board power for graphics cards. A 13900K is sold as a 125 W part and draws 253 W; a calculator built on TDP under-reads it by half.
  • Efficiency kept in its place. An 80 PLUS rating describes how much power a unit wastes, not how much it can deliver. It changes your electricity bill, not the wattage you need to buy.
  • Resolution treated as an input. The same processor and card can be CPU-limited at 1080p and GPU-limited at 4K. Any bottleneck figure quoted without a resolution attached is incomplete.

Where the data comes from

Benchmark scores come from large, independently published benchmark datasets, which are consistently measured and updated continuously. Power figures for current desktop parts are taken from manufacturer specifications — Intel ARK, AMD and NVIDIA — and are marked as verified in our database. Parts outside that curated set get power figures estimated from their benchmark score, which is less precise and is labelled as such.

What these tools cannot do

They are estimates built from published data, not measurements taken on your machine. They do not know how a specific game distributes its work, how fast your memory runs, what your cooling allows, or what else is running. They are good at telling you the size and direction of a problem and at comparing one option against another. They are not a substitute for benchmarking the game you actually play.

We would rather say that clearly than imply a precision the method does not support.

No accounts, no upsell

Every tool here is free and none of them requires an account. There is nothing to sign up for and no results held back behind a login. If something is useful, use it.
